Photojournalism

I love taking photos, because it requires you to observe the events you cover carefully. I view photojournalism as enhancing the story you're telling—you don't want a solid, in-depth story to be just a block of text, but you don't want photos that don't make sense in the wider context you place them in. Access to good photography equipment has allowed me to hone my skills as a creative photographer—I especially enjoy taking feature photos that dramatize a subject I am writing about.

The day after the 2024 Presidential Election, I took photos around City High. The environment was vastly different than it had been just the day before—City High has a large population of liberal students, and many were shocked and disappointed at the results of the election.

I wanted to capture this emotion, but also the victory of the students on the other side. Notably, a student wearing a Trump hat posed for a photo—a brief moment of celebration among a bastion of disappointment.

In order to take these photos for my Environmental Club story, I had to take a morning off of school to follow Environmental Club to a local elementary school, where they presented about the importance of composting and led activities about composting.

I took these photos on my digital camera, a Sony RX100, and I was surprised at how well they came out for such a small camera. It was hard to work with a camera with minimal zoom and autofocus.

Ramatou.jpg

This is probably my favorite photo that I've taken. To create it, I had staff reporter Ramatou Diallo sit in a dark room. She turned the brightness on her phone all the way up, and I took about 15 photos. Of the 15, this was the best one! There was still a little bit of background color (she was in front of a green screen) from the phone light, so I edited it out in Photoshop to give the illusion that Ramatou is enraptured by her phone, the only light in an otherwise empty void.

This photo was featured on the front page of The Little Hawk feature magazine, which was awarded Honorable Mention for magazine cover design by the NSPA and IHSPA.

Good Morning, City High!

I shot a photoshoot with the anchors of our weekly web show, Good Morning City High, for The Little Hawk's next feature magazine. I wanted to evoke an older generation of news shows, so I edited the photos with a creative style.

These photos aren't currently posted on The Little Hawk, but they will be as soon as the feature magazine comes out.
