Broadcast Journalism
I don't do a lot of video work, but I did enjoy the little that I have done. On The Little Hawk, we have a separate class section for Broadcast students, supported by Broadcast editors. Last year, my friend Martha and I decided to make our first ever video about Kitty Corner, a new business in downtown Iowa City.
Local Business Spotlight: Kitty Corner Social Club
Last year, Martha Willard and I filmed a video about a new business in Iowa City, Kitty Corner Social Club. We were initially drawn to Kitty Corner because the concept was different than what we had seen before. At Kitty Corner, we took b-roll of customers playing with cats from the Iowa City Animal Shelter, interviewed customers, employees, and the founder, and cuddled some kittens.
Later, Martha and I edited the video in Adobe Premiere, condensing two hours worth of content into less than three minutes, telling a story that is easily digestible by the audience.

Little Hawk Staff Get to Know You: Estelle Hartz
I filmed this video for a project where we interviewed different Little Hawk staff members. Usually, we use Adobe Premiere to edit videos, but this year we are experimenting with using Canva instead. Canva is a lot more intuitive than Premiere—there aren't as many features, but it's easy to use and good enough for simple projects like this one.
The Get To Know Little Hawk Staff videos haven't been published online yet, but we hope to post them on either Instagram or thelittlehawk.com soon.
Top Stories of 2025
To promote our most popular stories from the past year, news editor Martha Willard and I filmed an Instagram Reel about the most read story, Eight Dumb Bills, which we both helped to write.
